Inside the 5-Part Machine: What We Cover, Week by Week

October 1, 2026 · Updated October 9, 2026 · 8 min read · By Prakash Damodaran

TL;DR: The FI machine has five parts: income, expenses, investing, financial literacy, and connecting it all. The free weekly workshop works through them one part at a time, starting with your FI number. Where the room's questions go next, the teaching follows.

Most personal finance courses hand you a pile of videos and wish you luck. This is the opposite: one free hour a week, one small room, and a worksheet every session that forces the ideas into your actual numbers.

Here is the map of the five parts, in detail, so you know exactly what the workshop builds toward.

How the weeks work

We meet every Wednesday, 7:30pm ET, live on video, for 60 minutes. Free, always. Each session covers one part of the machine and ends with a worksheet, about 30 minutes of work, that applies the lesson to your own finances. Every session is recorded, and everyone who registers gets the replay.

The room is small on purpose. In a room that size, nobody hides, and everybody gets heard. And the journey evolves with the room: we start with how to get there, and as people move further along the path, the teaching follows their questions toward what comes after.

Part 1: Income

Financial independence starts before investing. It starts with what comes in. In this session we map your income the way an engineer maps a system: what are the parts, and which parts can grow?

We work through three ideas. First, your rung: where you stand in your career ladder right now, honestly assessed, and what the next two rungs pay. Most people have never written this down. Second, your 2x skill: the one skill that could plausibly double your income in three to five years, and the concrete plan to build it. Third, your streams: the income sources beyond your job that fit your life, sized realistically instead of romantically.

The worksheet asks uncomfortable questions, on purpose. Where is your income actually growing, and where is it flat? What would you need to believe to aim one rung higher? You leave with an income plan on one page.

Part 2: Expense management

This is about the gap between what you earn and what you keep. We build your expense sheet from scratch, category by category, and benchmark it against national averages so you can see where your money is actually going versus where a typical household's goes.

This is where the savings rate enters, and it is the most important number after your FI number itself. Your savings rate is the master lever on your timeline: at 5% real returns, saving 10% means about 51 years to independence, 30% means about 28, and 50% means about 17. Small changes in this one number move your freedom date by decades.

We also set up the raise rule: half of every future raise disappears into the machine automatically. Your lifestyle still improves with every raise. It just improves half as fast as your freedom arrives.

The worksheet puts your savings rate on autopilot: which accounts, which amounts, which dates. Automation is the whole trick. Willpower is not a system.

Part 3: Investing

Now the machine gets an engine. This session builds your portfolio blueprint: a core and satellite structure, sized by conviction, built to survive a drawdown without you panic-selling at the bottom.

The core is the boring part, and boring is the point: broad, low-cost, automatic. The satellites are where your judgment lives, sized by how much conviction you actually have, not how excited you feel this week. We talk honestly about drawdowns, because every portfolio has them, and the plan you make on a calm Wednesday is the plan that saves you on a panicked Monday.

No stock tips. No hot picks. Anyone promising those is selling something else. This is the machine: allocation, sizing, and behavior.

Part 4: Financial education

The literacy that compounds. We learn to read a financial statement without flinching, to price risk in plain language, and to ignore the noise that costs ordinary investors a fortune in churn and panic.

This is the quietest part and, a year later, often the one people cite most. The investors who survive are not the smartest. They are the ones who understand what they own well enough to hold it when holding is hard.

Part 5: Connect it all

Here we assemble the machine. Your FI number, computed from your real spending. Your income plan from part one. Your savings rate on autopilot from part two. Your portfolio blueprint from part three. Your literacy from part four.

Then we write the 90-day plan: the specific moves for the next three months, in order, with dates. A plan you will actually follow beats a perfect plan you will not. We keep it small enough to execute and big enough to matter.

What comes after

Here is the part no curriculum can pre-write. Some people in the room will already be well along the path, and their questions will be different: how to think about drawdowns in retirement, how concentrated is too concentrated, what a second act costs. Those questions become the teaching. The workshop starts with how to get there, and the room decides what comes next.

What you leave with

Your FI number. An income plan. A savings rate on autopilot. A portfolio blueprint. Financial literacy that compounds. And a 90-day plan with the machine running.

Five parts, one number, one machine. That is the journey.

Questions, answered

What are the five parts of the machine?

Income, expense management, investing, financial education, and connecting it all. Each part gets its own weekly workshop session and its own worksheet applied to your real numbers.

Where does the workshop start?

With your FI number. The first session computes the one number that buys your freedom, from your real spending, on a one-page worksheet. Everything after that is the machine that gets you to the number.

What if I am already past the basics?

Good, bring your questions. The workshop evolves with the room: once the foundations are covered, the teaching follows the room toward what comes after FI. The agenda is set by who shows up.
